The last beautiful birth of 2018 was a magical one! It has been only a couple of days since the birth of this cherub and I am still riding the wave of his magical arrival earth side.

Mom was 10 days past her estimated due date and she had been so sure he would arrive earlier.
The last few days of her pregnancy had been a constant battle against fear of baby arriving too late to birth at home. Unfortunately the California laws do not allow midwives to support home-birth past 42 weeks of pregnancy. Obviously these laws have been made by home-birth haters and money lovers. But I diverge…

Then finally one afternoon, right before the end of 2018, she called them to let me know that she thoughts she was in labor. Yet she wasn’t 100% sure and she did not want to disturb me and make me rush to her house if it was going to be a false alarm or too early to call her birth team in.

I remember telling her on the phone that all was well. I remember striking a deal with her: “I’ll go home and make myself a smoothie and then slowly make my way over”.

When I arrived to her house, she was still very smiley and chatty. Her midwife called me to check in and after some debating, we both agreed that it was best for her to come check on mama. We all knew there was a very high potential that his birth would best!

Sure enough as soon as Midwife Monica arrive, we started to get the birth pool ready. The surges kept coming, but this mama had no problem facing each one of them with determination and power.

Once the birth pool was set up, she gently eased in the tub and within few minutes, her baby was born in the cheers and owes of the whole team.

This family had chosen to send her first baby to a friend’s house. Not so much because they didn’t want to share the birth of his baby brother with him; more so because they wanted to enjoy the birth of their second baby with intimacy and privacy. They wanted to dedicate their full attention to her baby, knowing that him being the second born, he would always have to share with his brother.

After checking on baby and mom, I prepped the cake mom had meticulously and thoughtfully baked for her baby. She had baked each piece ahead of time and froze it. The day she felt baby coming, she took each piece and composed the final master cake!

Being it the end of the year, we popped a bottle of champagne and sang happy birth day. What a honor to celebrate the last beautiful birth of 2018 !

All this time I have been in owe of this mama, who every day she didn’t wake up with contractions and every night she would go to bed still pregnant, found strength nevertheless and courage to express her feelings, accepts them and trust her baby.

I truly believe this was her kink to over come: for some it’s the pregnancy, for others it’s the birth, or the breastfeeding, sometimes just the parenting itself.

We all walk into this journey with a different baggage, with a lesson to learn and the opportunity to soften our heart.

It is simply a joy to witness, when their triumph radiates to everyone around them.

This mama’s victory has been my pride and happiness and what a lovely way to attend the last birth of 2018!
